KIDSON TYPES AROUND AOTEAROA NEW ZEALAND

KTdescriptorIn Pohl et al. (2021, J. Climate) we re-defined weather types around Aotearoa New Zealand (known as Kidson types after the work of Kidson, 2000: Int. J. Climatol.) and completed them with quantitative descriptors monitoring the intensity and location of their main atmospheric centers of action. Below, we provide links to download the ERA5 redefinition of these types and their descriptors, over period 1979-2019 (leap years removed).

The original Kidson type distribution was based on NCEP/NCAR reanalysis. Both time distributions strongly differ (about 35% of the days are not ascribed to the same type, possibly due to a much increased spatial resolution in ERA5 grids). The original Kidson type time series are also provided below, together with corresponding descriptors of the atmospheric centers of action. This dataset is updated and kindly provided by Prof. James Renwick, Victoria University of Wellington.
